Everton: Is this major transfer worth all the fuss?
There’s been a lot of speculation over the last couple of days about the idea of Everton signing Chelsea striker Demba Ba.
While he’s been a decent Premier League player he hasn’t exactly covered himself in glory at Stamford Bridge and you would imagine that a move away would be inevitable this summer.
In some ways he would represent a like-for-like swap with Romelu Lukaku if he did turn up at Everton.
He’s a big target man with good upper body strength and a regularly classy touch.
But, while he might turn out to be a decent squad member for Everton, you do have to say that he’s a really poor man’s Lukaku.
And 29 Ba doesn’t have the energy or the power of the big Belgian and his goals to games ratio is also much poorer – he’s scored 14 goals in 51 appearances for Chelsea.
In fact Ba has only really had one good season in The Premier League – and that was with Newcastle.
The idea of Everton shelling out anywhere near the current salary of £80,000 a week for this guy seems like a bit of a dodgy move.
Roberto Martinez has been extremely canny in the transfer market so far and we can’t quite imagine him spending so much money on a player who is possibly on a slow downward trajectory.
Nevertheless The Guardian follows up on the story by reporting Tuesday:
Demba Ba could be about to join Everton after holding talks with the Merseyside club. Ba, a once feared and respected St James’s Park goalscorer, has become a pitied and rather pointless figure at Chelsea and so is likely to relish the chance to repair his reputation at Goodison Park.
Everton fans: we would definitely like to hear from you on this one. Would Ba be a useful addition to the squad or someone who could only play a bit-part for Everton next season?
Let’s have a look at the lad in action.
