Magic player

Sometimes clubs sign players who bed in so quickly that it’s almost impossible to imagine what the team sheet looked like without them.

Such is the case at Everton this season with James McCarthy and Gareth Barry. They have been immaculate in the middle of the park. Barry rarely gives the ball away and is composure personified. He still puts a shift in swell. As for McCarthy, many Everton fans will be so pleased that Marouane Fellaini did make the move to Manchester United. Because, in McCarthy, they have a younger and even more promising central midfielder. He’s a really classy enforcer already.

But, as with most areas of this developing squad, Everton will want to augment their midfield this summer. Because beyond those two the quality drops off quite quickly.

The Guardian reports with some confidence today that Everton will go back in for old boy Jack Rodwell inn the summer.

Roberto Martínez intends to offer Jack Rodwell a summer return to Everton following the midfielder’s struggle to make an impact at Manchester City.

The Everton manager believes the Southport-born player will be receptive to a return to Goodison in the summer but City would have to accept a significant loss on Rodwell for the deal to proceed.

We all know how good this lad was at Everton. But, as with his stint at Manchester City, his career has been dictated to by injury. But, if Roberto Martinez can get this guy fit, we are talking about one of the best midfielders in Britain. He had a few dodgy games for Manchester City and, at a club with that sort of money, you don’t get too many chances.

At Everton Rodwell would get a chance to bed in once more and we have no doubts at all that he would do the business on Merseyside. He’s a brilliant blend of craft and graft – the perfect modern midfielder when he’s firing.

Everton fans, would you agree that this would represent superb business for the club?
