Everton linked with another World Cup star

As usual it appears that a huge chunk of transfer activity is being reserved for the last few weeks of August.

It’s generally a question of who blinks first in the summer window and, after all the posturing of July, August is the business end.

Everton have of course done great business with their record transfer of Romelu Lukaku. But now they have had time to sit back and admire that signing they will need to get a couple more in in the next few weeks.

And you would imagine that the striking department still needs additions. Lukaku will be the main man next season but he is going to need some help and Everton don’t currently have too much depth up top.

This is why the potential deal for Samuel Eto’o, who went to his fourth World Cup this summer, makes so much sense to us. He’s a top level player who is obviously past his best. But he still has so much to offer. He’s still quick, athletic and doesn’t tire easily. Most importantly, he’s still got his knack for goals and was top scorer at Chelsea last season – no mean feat for a man somewhere in his thirties!

The Daily Mail reports:

Everton are exploring the possibility of signing free agent Samuel Eto’o, meaning they could face direct competition from rivals Liverpool for the Cameroonian forward.

The 33-year-old’s wage demands are an obvious stumbling block but as he is a free agent, Everton have shown an interest.

If we suggest that Eto’o doesn’t really care where plays, as long as he gets a last big payday, you might imagine that he won’t fight for the cause – he’ll be an expensive passenger. But this is a top professional who loves the game would certainly improve the Everton squad.

He would allow Roberto Martinez to rest Lukaku and still have a top quality and balanced side on the park. So, despite the potentially high wages, we think that it would be a great – and exciting – move for Everton.

Let’s see Eto’o banging in the goals over the last year. Everton fans: too pricey wage wise?
