Big swoop mooted

There have been rumblings for some time now about the idea of Tom Cleverley moving to Everton.

After a really promising start to life in the first team at Manchester United his form has tailed off and he hasn’t realised that sizeable potential that he showed in his early career.

When you see him playing for Manchester United there is no lack of effort on his part but he regularly seems to go missing for large chunks of games.

But Roberto Martinez is apparently interested in taking a player and reports this week suggest that he may make an £8 million move for the lad in the summer.

In some respects you can see why Martinez would like the player at Everton. He’s technically decent and is a one and two touch type of player who likes to keep the ball moving.

The problem is that he doesn’t seem to move the ball forward enough. Perhaps it’s a confidence issue – very few players have improved their status at Manchester United this season.

Everton might be the perfect place for Tom Cleverley to reignite his career and with the manager as good as Roberto Martinez anything is possible.

While we could see Cleverley moving on, unless Danny Welbeck forces his way out of the club we can’t see United wanting to let him go due to his versatility. But The Mail also reckons Everton want the England forward:

Manchester United face a fight to keep Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley, with Everton planning a double swoop for the pair.

Manager Roberto Martinez will consider a move for Welbeck if Everton fail to strike a deal to keep on-loan Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku, who is also wanted by Tottenham and would command a transfer fee of more than £20million.

Martinez, who had the Manchester United man on loan at Wigan Athletic, sees Cleverley as a replacement for Leon Osman, with £8million the likely price for the 24-year-old.

Let’s take a look at Cleverley in action. Everton fans – would this be an underwhelming signing? Or is he the perfect player for Roberto to work his magic on at Everton?

I don’t see how any of this is relevant. Until the end of the season a new regime is in force at OT,where either of these two could be first choice and play to their full potential, albeit for few matches. Then they may be wanted as squad players by the incoming boss and more importantly, wish to stay and try to win their places. If not,I wouldn’t mind Cleverley in a blue shirt, but can’t see Wellbeck prospering anywhere other than at United. Mind you I’d take a punt on Chicarito.
