Stellar midfielder wanted

Financial FairPlay finally seems to be biting as Chelsea no longer appear able to splurge tens of millions at will without balancing the books. The impending sale of David Luiz seems to be an indicator of the changing times in world football.

But Jose Mourinho is a canny operator and you can easily imagine that Chelsea will shuffle the pack and start next season stronger than ever. The sale of Juan Mata freed up nigh on £40m and Luiz’s sale appears to be the catalyst for the arrival of a stellar midfielder. The Telegraph says:

Chelsea have agreed to sell David Luiz to Paris St-Germain for a fee of about £48million – a world-record for a defender – and are planning to invest the funds in a top-class midfielder.

The Premier League club hope to sign one of Juventus’ Paul Pogba, Atlético Madrid’s Koke or Paulinho of Tottenham Hotspur. Each would cost in excess of £30million.

Pogba – It’s hard to know quite how far this lad can go. Since leaving Manchester United for Juventus he has soared to become of the hottest properties in Europe. The goalscoring midfield replacement for Super Franky Lampard?

Koke – Another who soccersweep have followed closely this season. Koke has been at the heart of Atletico’s rise this season with consistently commanding performances in the midfield. May prove an even better investment than Pogba.

Paulinho – Perhaps a more underwhelming solution than the others. Paulinho hasn’t covered himself in glory in his first year at Tottenham and is possibly a less adventurous player than the other two. Still, with 25 caps and 5 goals for Brazil, he’s no slouch either.
