Chelsea to bid for 63 cap master in January – the major winter signing? Report

On the surface this seems like an outlandish one. Chelsea look absolutely rock solid at the back and even their expensive new summer signing Filipe Luis is struggling to get game time in the back five, with Cesar Azpilicueta continuing to play out of his skin.

With Kurt Zouma also in reserve and looking as strong as a bull you might imagine that Chelsea are well catered for in defence.

But John Terry (34 in December) could feasibly hang up his boots come May and that will leave a huge hole at the back. Cahill has been a great buy but Chelsea could easily go for more experience in there.

The Star reckons that this experience could come it the form of Barcelona’s peripheral centre back Gerard Pique.

Chelsea to make £24m January move for Manchester United target Gerard Pique

After winning everything with Barca he’s been one of the victims of the recent mini rebuild and could well leave the club.

At 27 he’s got years left in the tank and would provide the sort of passing ability that is so often overlooked in Terry’s game but is crucial to Chelsea.

Whether Pique is the sort of defender that Jose would usually go for is questionable however. Pique isn’t that quick or particularly physical. His forte is his technique. But this skill set could work well in tandem with the more robust Cahill.

Let’s take a look at the lad in action. Chelsea fans: good enough?
