Chelsea shock favourites for superstar’s signature

Shock Chelsea reunion?

While Chelsea have been linked to several high profile midfielders over the last few months, many fans believe that the striking department needs the most urgent attention – someone to put the ball in the onion bag on a frequent basis.

Nevertheless, the ageing midfield will need attention at some stage fairly soon. Marco van Ginkel is out long-term, Frank Lampard has picked up a not unsubstantial injury and players like Essien and Mikel are far less influential than in times past. Before long Chelsea will need another combative and powerful player to come in and dominate the opposition in the way that Yaya Toure does so beautifully for Manchester City.

In 2011, after 2 quiet years at the club, Nemanja Matic left Chelsea for Benfica in a deal which saw David Luiz come in the opposite direction. Matic has since gone on to become one of the leading lights in Europe with some stellar performances for the Portuguese giants. He’s played 55 times for the club, scoring 6 goals in the process.

The 6ft 4in powerhouse has rocketed in terms of his value and Chelsea would now have to pay top dollar to secure his services ahead of the many other reportedly interested suitors. But they may well have a first option on the player and he has been persistently linked with a return to the club.

Bookmaker SkyBet think that the deal may well happen and, accordingly, Chelsea are their favourites to sign the player in January. At odds of 6/1 you wouldn’t put your house on it (please don’t put your house on it) but he looks like a Mourinho-type player – big and strong but with great football intelligence.

Let’s see him in action. Chelsea fans, does Matic boil your potatoes?
