After a slightly bumpy ride since Jose’s return, Chelsea are nestled in behind the frontrunners in the league and topped their group in Europe. So, it’s a case of job done for now.

But the main complaint of Chelsea this season is their inability to kill teams off. They create loads of chances but the strikers have been profligate. This wastefulness has seen them lose more times than Chelsea fans would care for.

So we think that it’s simply a matter of before Mourinho spends big on a really high profile striker. Well, they don’t get much higher profile than Wayne Rooney, who has once again been linked with Chelsea today. The Mirror says that The Blues have been encouraged but the admittedly rather strange fact that Manchester United haven’t yet offered Rooney a new contract. His current deal expires in June 2015.

The Mirror says:

Chelsea are on red alert to make a second bid for Wayne Rooney after it emerged the England striker is still waiting for a new Manchester United contract offer.

Jose Mourinho’s Blues made the Scouse ace their prime target last summer, only giving up in the final days before the transfer window closed despite not going beyond their opening £24million bid.

You would imagine that Manchester United would do everything in their power to hold onto Rooney especially after their terrible start. Rooney has been one of the few positives at Old Trafford this season and remains the most important player in The Premier League. Whoever has Rooney has a great chance of winning trophies.

We think that Chelsea will bolster up front but still find it hard to imagine that they could negotiate such a big deal with their main rival in the winter window. The player too would surely rather see out this pre-World Cup season at Manchester United rather than risk poor form in new surroundings.

Chelsea fans, do you think it’s a goer?
