EURO 2012

Chelsea – Roman at Euro 2012 for more players?

The triumphant owner of Chelsea, Roman Abramovich, has been spotted at the Euros in the last few days. He may well be there to simply enjoy a festival of football, but one suspects that a man of Roman’s ambition is probably undertaking his own scouting mission whilst there.

So who might have tempted him to bring out the cheque book so far? Whilst Chelsea have great defenders the right back spot hasn’t been cemented by any one player in the last few years. Bosingwa has gone, Ferreira has faded and Ivanovic seems as if he may want a new challenge. If Chelsea don’t make a bid for Gregory van der Wiel, there are other options.

Theodore Gebre Selassie

The Czech Republic right back may be interesting Abramovich. Amazingly he is probably as quick as Bosingwa but he seems better equipped to do the defensive bits than the Portuguese. He is a genuine threat down the right flank and, at 25, has been one of the stand out performers of the competition so far.

Mathieu Dehuchy

Another right back who has excelled in EURO 2012. He was very dangerous against England, combining speed and athleticism with a superb end product. He is apparently keen on joining his old Lille team mate Yohan Cabaye at Newcastle but if Roman bats his eyelashes in the direction of Debuchy he may find it difficult to refuse the lure of the London lifestyle and Champions League football.

Philipp Lahm

There are few clubs around the world that wouldn’t want this guy. He’s right-footed but seems equally at home on either flank and combines great defensive nous with a deadly delivery in the more advanced areas. If he did want to leave Germany he could basically take his pick but Chelsea seems to be one of the most attractive destinations in football at the moment. One suspects that, playing in such a good Germany side, Mr. Abramovich will get ample opportunity to see this guy in action over the next couple of weeks.
