Chelsea: Portents of one more massive deal?

Yes Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has said that there won’t be any more signings this summer. But we all know that he’s a cheeky little monkey.

And the sale of Romelu Lukaku to Everton for £28m may give him the get out clause that he requires to do a U-turn on his comments.

The sale of the Belgian has brought into sharp focus the amount of money that Chelsea have made in transfers this year. It’s unusual to see Chelsea actually making money but we think that Jose has done great business. He’s generated revenue totalling around £141m from following transfers:

Juan Mata £37m
Kevin De Bruyne £18m
David Luiz £50M
£28m Romelu Lukaku
Demba Ba £8m

and Chelsea’s purchases total around £94m, plus Pasalic

Kurt Zouma £12m
Diego Costa £32m
Didier Drogba Free
Cesc Fabregas £30m
Filipe Luis £20m
Mario Pasalic Undisclosed

When you consider that players like Torres, Obi Mikel and Cech could, conceivably, be sold the coffers could swell further.

Chelsea made a total loss of about £50m in the year ending June 30 2013 so they may simply be looking to balance the books.

But we do feel that Chelsea are perhaps clearing the decks for one more uber signing.

We believe that if a decent bid came in for Torres then Chelsea would bite the hand off the buying club. Torres’s head went ages ago and we just can’t see him getting back to his best.

Diego Costa and Didier Drogba have joined but Ba and Eto’o have left, so Chelsea are still fairly light up top. Even though they only play with one striker, an injury to Costa in the winter could leave them short for the latter stages of the title charge and The Champions League.

So our guess is that Chelsea will sign another striker. Anyone for Cavani or Falcao?

Let’s see the Colombian in action.
