Signing on the cards?

There is no shame in losing by the single goal to a team who is playing its best football in years. The good news for Aston Villa is that they weren’t bad last night and also got their main man back on the scoresheet.

But there remains too much of a burden on Christian Benteke to bag the goals. When he isn’t scoring Aston Villa can look a little toothless. They obviously need to make more forward signings – especially with news that Libor Kozak will be out for the rest of the season with a broken leg that he sustained in training.

One player who could do a job for Aston Villa is Wigan striker Grant Holt. The career of the 32-year-old has stagnated somewhat since he requested to leave Norwich after a superb season a couple of years ago.

He has only scored twice for Wigan this season but he remains a big and powerful player with a good touch and excellent understanding of the game.

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert dropped a hint about his potential signing this week:

‘There are things going on at the moment. We are trying to get people in. I know Grant from Norwich. He is a proper man,’ said Lambert.

And when questioned on a move after tonight’s loss to Arsenal, Lambert simply added: ‘We’ll see.’

While some Aston Villa fans might prefer a highly pacey and mobile player to come into the club we think that Grant Holt would provide excellent cover for Benteke, allowing the manager to keep the same system, but give the big Belgian a break from time to time.

Holt alone may not be enough business in the winter window but it’s a good start if it does happen.

Let’s see the guy in action. Aston Villa fans, would you be pleased with this addition to the squad?

There has been these great, talented young-ish players that could have come to the club, the likes of locadia and defour. Lambert then loses his bottle and doesn’t want to risk signings that don’t have PL experience. Grant holt will only be useful as a bench warmer and does not contribute anything new to the squad. If the 2 afformentioned signings do also happen then I think I can forgive lambert on this one piece of business for a player he knows wellbut cannot do much. But lambert has to start to realise that he cannot buy the Norwich players and has to look elsewhere for some experience.
