Arsenal – Wenger to continue rebuild with these two?

After the signing of Lukas Podolski, speculation today suggests that Arsene Wenger will continue his team overhaul by pursuing Borussia Dortmund starlet Mario Gotze and Ajax captain Jan Vertonghen. At 19, Gotze is one of the most sought after young players in Europe and would probably cost the sort of hefty amount that Arsene Wenger usually refuses to pay.

The composed, lithe and attacking midfielder can be deployed in the centre of midfield or on the right wing and has already become a mainstay in the Dortmund side, scoring 11 goals in just over 50 appearances. He also has 2 goals in a dozen games for Germany. Certainly one for now and the future then.

The stock of Jan Vertonghen has risen sharply since his largely excellent performances for Ajax against Manchester United in this season’s Europa League. Despite relinquishing possession cheaply for Chicharito’s goal at Old Trafford, the Belgian stopper is a towering presence at the back for his club. But like his countryman Thomas Vermaelen, Vertonghen doesn’t limit himself to rearguard actions and loves to stride up the park to get involved in attack. He’s a genuinely impressive player but one potential stumbling block could be that, also akin to Vermaelen, Vertonghen is left-footed and thus prefers to play on the left of any centre back pairing.
