One deal this week for Arsenal?

For a team chasing the title, with so little cover up top, it’s been a strangely quiet winter window for Arsenal so far. As we all know by now the last week of the window is historically where most of the business gets done. And Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger will surely want to add a player this week.

Even if it’s just a stop gap – a Dimitar Berbatov or an Alvaro Morata – then Wenger must surely want to make an addition. He looks as calm as ever in interviews and it’s hard to gauge how he actually feels about the window. But we believe that he is working hard behind the scenes to add another player.

It seems that the number one target, regardless of how difficult a deal would be to do, is Julian Draxler of Schalke. We spoke yesterday about how various reports were fairly confident that a deal could be done this week. Differing messages have come from Schalke over the last week and, although Draxler could well end up at Arsenal, it may be impossible to tie up such a big deal before the end of the window.

Latest reports suggest that Arsenal have a contingency plan if they can’t get Draxler in Janaury. The Daily Mail says:

Arsene Wenger is keen to tie up a deal for France attacking midfielder Yoann Gourcuff this week.

Lyon have been hit by financial problems in recent years and despite the club president stating no-one is for sale, the Gunners enquired about their asking price at the start of January.

Gourcuff is a French international with 31 caps and 4 goals for his country. He’s represented Rennes, Milan, Bordeaux and Lyon who he joined in 2010. He’s played 66 times, for the deposed powerhouses of Ligue 1, scoring ten goals in the process. Gourcuff is a classy and elegant attacking midfielder who knows where the onion bag is.

While he may not be the ideal answer for the attacking department at Arsenal he would certainly be a good addition to the squad. A squad which will surely one day consist entirely of midfielders!
