Arsenal: Shock signing that all fans want is on his way – report

Arsene-Wenger

New man

We have been whining on for years about who Arsenal should sign in order to get closer to regaining that Holy Grail of a Premier League title.

We would certainly question many of the signings made in that time – if not always in terms of quality then certainly in terms of suitability.

But perhaps we have been looking at it from the wrong angle. After 434 years in charge of the team, perhaps it’s time to retire Mr.Wenger and sign a new manager.

No one could ever argue successfully that Wenger hasn’t been good for Arsenal. He is almost unanimously loved by Arsenal fans. But, at 65, perhaps he has done as much as he can for the club. Maybe he can’t take them any further on the pitch. It certainly looks as if Arsene has run out of ideas.

Every time you start to believe that Wenger has built solid foundations a big team comes along with a sledge hammer and smashes that idea to pieces.

Reports today suggest that Pep Guardiola could be the man to replace the legend.

Bayern Munich boss Pep Guardiola will leave the German club when his contract expires in 2016, with Arsenal set to secure his services if Arsene Wenger steps down.

We are yet to be fully convinced by Pep. He’s an eloquent and slick indvidiual but his success at Barcelona has to be measured by the fact that he had the best player ever in his team at his peak and two of the best midfielders you will ever see providing the ammo.

At Bayern he hasn’t met with unanimous approval but Munchen do look very good again this season. Although another Spaniard, Roberto Martinez, has nowhere near the trophy cabinet of Pep, we have a sneaking feeling that he has the hunger and ingenuity to be an even better choice for Arsenal.

But a change is as good as a rest and either would be decent replacements for a guy who needs to leave the stage gracefully rather than being dragged away kicking and screaming.

Arsenal fans: Pep or Roberto?
