Arsenal to sign their new Tony Adams?

Despite already bringing in several players, including World Cup superstar Alexis Sanchez, Arsene Wenger is probably not finished in this transfer window.

The veteran manager is still looking at doing some business before the start of The Premier League at the weekend.

One of the biggest areas of concern for Arsenal is in defence.

Following the sale of Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona, The Gunners are now short of central defenders, with just Laurent Koscielny the only established centre back available for the game against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Per Mertesacker has only just returned from holiday following the 2014 World Cup and Calum Chambers is still inexperienced, with both the player and manager still not sure where his best position is.

No doubt then that the club are being linked with German centre back Benedikt Höwedes. According to The Telegraph the defender has been made a genuine transfer target.

Manager wants cover in defence following the sale of Thomas Vermaelen, to Barcelona, with Benedikt Höwedes, Luiz Gustavo and William Carvalho high on his list

The Schalke 04 captain is vastly experienced at both club and international level. He has been at the German club his whole career and has made over 240 appearances in all competitions for them, leading them to two major honours in that time.

He was also an important member of the German squad for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Höwedes played every single minute of the competition and put in a number of solid performances in an unfamiliar left back position.

He would certainly provide adequate cover at centre back and may even provide stronger competition to the partnership of Koscielny and Mertesacker than Vermaelen did.

Höwedes is a proper nuts and bolts defender who has great authority and puts his body on the line for the cause, much like Tony Adams.

The source also reports that Wenger is looking at possible defensive midfield options as he looks to add strength to his midfield. Two possible targets according to paper are Luis Gustavo and William Carvalho.

Arsenal have previously shown interest in signing Gustavo, who joined Wolfsburg last season, and Carvalho is seen an ideal player who could add much needed defensive qualities to a small-statured midfield.

I would settle for any two of the three we definitely need additional cover in those two areas. So let’s not get carried away with rumours fingers crossed we sign them.
