Andros Townsend for Manchester United?

Worth a punt

When Andros Townsend made his first few appearances for England, you felt that a special player had arrived.

Here was a rare talent whose forte was to carry the ball – to dribble at pace and twist the blood of the opposition. In this respect he’s a dieing breed. The game is dominated by passing these days but the very best players are still those who can beat a man on their own.

Add Townsend’s natural pace and it seemed clear that England had a real star in the making. But injuries, and the inconsistent form that came with them, have sent the lad so far down the pecking order that SkyBet had QPR as nailed on favourites to sign the player in the summer.

We think that, under the right tutelage, Townsend can still be a superstar. Manchester United, have been linked to the player already this year, and could do a lot worse than to take a punt on him – we could imagine Townsend thriving under Louis van Gaal.

His raw pace and dribbling skill could surely be honed by the big Dutch maestro at the Manchester United helm. He has the ball control to provide that invaluable ‘out’ when his team is under pressure and his ground speed gives him such added value in today’s game.

And in the offensive third he’s also very good. He has good distribution off either foot and loves to cut in from the right flank and unleash a shot off that powerful left boot. Apart from anything he’s just brilliant to watch. So graceful across the ground. A United type.

We believe that, eventually, LvG will buy another speedy winger to play on the right of the diamond. In the biggest games he may well play with an extra midfielder in there. But signing another speedster could offer balance to the side and also take the strain off Di Maria as the main penetrator in the team.

If LvG could use the coaching template which worked wonders with Arjen Robben on Andros Townsend then perhaps the Englishman could flourish at Manchester United. Townsend’s M.O. would be to use his speed in the dribble to get up the park sharpish and deliver simple balls into the world class strike force.

In short, United could use more pace and this guy would be a very interesting proposition.

Manchester United fans: Could Townsend be an absolute bargain for the club?

I shouldnt be telling you this but Townsend really isnt very good. His delivery is poor and his shooting is awful. Ignore his 2-3 good games for England. As for being as good as Robben…..you must be joking!!! I watch him every week and he’s not as good as Lennon, never mind Robben.
