5 reasons why Jose will let Mata go to Manchester United

This one could well happen

This looks like it’s going to be the big story of the transfer window. Most of today’s papers are suggesting Manchester United will make a bid for the brilliant Spaniard Juan Mata. The question is whether Chelsea would accept an offer from a competitor. Here are five reasons why we think that they will.

Strengthening United to weaken the opposition – Much has been written about Mata not going to Manchester United because it would strengthen a direct rival. But, let’s be clear, Manchester United are no longer domestic rivals with Chelsea for the title this season. United are 14 points back with 16 games to go. They need to claw back almost a point per game. If one team can do it it’s United but it’s virtually impossible. Also Chelsea have played United home and away in the league but Manchester United still have to play all the other big boys. So Chelsea would actually be improving their chances of the title by strengthening United.

PSG are bigger rivals – The French side are the other main suitors for Mata. But the latest incarnation of PSG is one year older, one year more coherent and unified. Surely they represent a bigger threat to Chelsea, in terms of European success next season, than Manchester United. Chelsea would arguably prefer to play United in their current situation than the French billionaires.

Mourinho the realist – HE may be a Machiavellian so and so but Jose is a good guy. He knows that Mata doesn’t fit into his game plan and that this is harming the Spaniard’s career and World Cup chances. Great managers sometimes let good players go because it’s the right thing to do.

Rooney – although we still think Rooney to Chelsea is highly unlikely, allowing Manchester United to take Mata will certainly do them no harm in any further pursuit of Englishman.

FIFA Fairplay – Chelsea continue to spend like absolute lunatics and they will need to balance the books at some stage. Manchester United are desperate and this should keep the price is nice and high – £40m wouldn’t be bad for a day’s work.
