The Big One

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has had to put up with more than his fair share of flack over the last 10 years as the trophies have dried up and the questions about his transfer policy have mounted.

Many onlookers believe that Arsenal still need to strengthen their spine and, particularly with the injury to Olivier Giroud, questions have been asked as to whether Wenger will sign a top striker before the end of the window.

With Giroud sidelined for a couple more months there have been links with players like Loic Remy and Edinson Cavani. The latest hype surrounds a move for the sensational Monaco forward Radamel Falcao and, interestingly, Arsene Wenger name checked the player in his weekly press conference. Usually so guarded about specific names that he may bring in Wenger smiled and said:

‘if we sign Falcao you will be informed’

As usual, in the same interview, Wenger talked about spending money in the right kind of way and the idea of spending up to £20 million on a one-year loan for the player doesn’t seem to fit Arsenal’s policy. But we wouldn’t completely rule out a permanent move for a player who would surely take Arsenal to the next level.

Falcao is the sort of player who could give Arsenal that ‘smash and grab’ quality in the biggest games. The top teams don’t have to play well to win providing they have a world class striker who can score a goal out of nothing in a contest between evenly matched sides. Whether Giroud is that man is highly debatable. Falcao most certainly is.

Let’s see the lad in action. Arsenal fans: is a striker the priority?

Seasoned Wenger watchers must also have noticed that he used Falcao’s name. It could be a red herring but could also be true. Wenger usually avoids outright lies when being questioned. Though it might seem unlikely ,my gut feeling is Wenger will try hard to get him ,though that may not prove enough to get his man.
