Various reports today claim that Newcastle could be about to continue their squad transformation this summer by making a move for Celtic’s Virgil van Dijk.

The Express reports:

Magpies manager Alan Pardew has turned his attention to the £8million-rated Dutchman, who is also on the radar of Premier League rivals Swansea City, Southampton and Tottenham as well as Hamburg.

The Scotsman reports:

Newcastle United weigh up Virgil van Dijk move

The 23 year old is a man mountain at 6ft 4in and only moved to Celtic last year after rising to prominence in the Dutch league at Groningen where he played 67 times and scored 7 goals.

Although he hasn’t quite graduated to the senior Holland national side just yet he has played a few times at youth level and seems to be something of a late bloomer. Certainly, over the last two years, he has blossomed into a solid and commanding defender who also scores a few goals.

He looks as if his height could eventually catch up on him in terms of mobility. But, at his young age, he’s still really quick across the ground once he gets going.

Let’s take a look at the lad in action. Newcastle fans: does he look like someone who can improve the first team immediately or would he have a more gradual exposure to the starting eleven?
