Manchester United have reached an agreement to sign Argentina defender Marcos Rojo from Sporting Lisbon.

The deal is subject to a medical and personal terms being agreed but none of the parties involved are expecting any issues on this one. The fee is said to be in the region of £16m.

Manchester United’s official website reports:

United reach agreement with Sporting for Rojo

Manchester United is delighted to announce it has reached an agreement with Sporting Lisbon to sign defender Marcos Rojo, subject to a medical and agreeing personal terms.

Manchester United have been desperate to bolster their defence this summer having lost Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra and the Nemanja Vidic. They also missed out on the signing of Arsenal star Thomas Vermaelen to Barcelona and it looks as if Borussia Dortmund centre back Mats Hummels will remain at his club next season.

All this meant that it was imperative that Manchester United got this deal done. But many expect the club to sign another defender before September.

A question on everyone’s lips now is whether the Argentine will be joined by his countrymean, Angel di Maria, at Manchester United over the next few weeks.

We will bring you more on the story as it unfolds. Meanwhile let’s see Manchester United’s new acquisition in action.
