Newcastle are reportedly interested in signing Charlton Athletic’s exciting centre back Joe Gomez.

A report in The Daily Mail today suggests that The Magpies are looking to bring the player to Tyneside where he could continue his development in their setup.

The 17-year-old defender is one of the most promising youngsters in the country. He exploded onto the scene following a hugely impressive campaign in the European Under-17 Championship over the summer.

The Addicks though are determined to keep the youngster, who they know could be worth big money in a few years’ time. With his game time at bigger clubs likely to be limited, Gomez may well choose to remain at Charlton where he will have more first-team opportunities.

Newcastle will face tough competition from Everton if they do choose to go ahead and attempt to sign him. The Toffees are also keen on the player, with Roberto Martinez having a strong belief in bringing players through the club from a young age. Gomez has also attracted the interest of bigger clubs such as Arsenal and Chelsea.

The youngster has found his playing time at Charlton restricted but has impressed during his appearances for England at youth levels. He has since gone on to make 13 appearances for the England U17 side, helping them keep a number of clean sheets.

The centre back would not be the first youngster that Newcastle have signed this summer. 20-year-old Ayoze Perez joined from Tenerife in June.

The Magpies have already had a busier than usual transfer window. The club have brought in previous few players over the past season, with big name players like Yohan Cabaye leaving Tyneside.

Over the summer they have already brought in the likes of Ajax captain Siem de Jong, French playmaker Remy Cabella and Jack Colback from local rivals Sunderland.
