Back on?

With Manchester United signing Ander Herrera for just under £30 million last month you would imagine that the creative midfield role would not be an urgent concern.

Manchester United will surely spend most of their remaining transfer kitty on a couple of defenders, a combative central midfielder, and a winger or two.

But there has been ongoing speculation for the last two or three years linking Manchester United with a big bid for Wesley Sneijder.

The Express says today:

MANCHESTER UNITED have been told that they will need to stump up £16m to land Wesley Sneijder from Galatasaray this summer.

At 30 he has had a fantastic World Cup and, after the most boring and ultimately fruitless summer of rumour two years ago Sneijder could be back on the radar.

With Louis van Gaal at the helm it’s not inconceivable that Manchester United could make another move for a player who recently said:

“I am happy at Galatasaray. I have established myself at the club and have settled in.

“However, if Van Gaal were make me an offer I would have to at least consider it.

Now the Galatasaray chairman has moved to clarify the situation regarding any potential transfer. This statement may be a warning to suitors or could be read as an indirect way of putting a player, who has 104 caps for Holland, on the market.

He said:

“Wesley Sneijder has a release clause set at €20m [£16m].

“Any team that give us that money and he wants to go, we can’t keep him.

“Legally speaking, we have no right.”

…and here’s the potential sales pitch:

Prandelli added: “He is one of the biggest players for the Netherlands and Galatasaray.

When he signed for Galatasaray some people believed that Sneijder was past his peak. But The World Cup has proven that has lost none of his athleticism or finishing ability.

But he’s another player who probably fits most comfortably at number 10 – an area in which Manchester United are more than covered.

With the addition of Ander Herrera in the attacking midfield role you might imagine that Manchester United would want to now concentrate on other areas.

But Manchester United are generally low on midfielders and Sneijder would obviously be a good addition.
