Solid addition?

There is hot debate about how many players Manchester United need to sign this summer.

The midfield will need a little more attention and many think that the defence could do with at least two more additions.

Luke Shaw is a wonderful signing and will go straight into the first-team, you would expect. Phil Jones is a brilliant player in the making and we strongly believe he’ll be a future captain of Manchester United.

And although Chris Smalling had some shocking performances, filling in as a right back last season, we still think he’s a very promising central defender.

But perhaps another centre back and right back could be added to the squad this summer.

Manchester United are being linked with Dutch players left, right and centre and the reasons are obvious.

One of the defenders who has been linked with Manchester United from the Dutch squad is defender Ron Vlaar.

The 29 year old Villa centre back played 50 odd games for his club last season and put in some solid performances in The Premier League and at the World Cup – he’s played 27 times for Holland.

Manchester United are currently favourites with Bet Victor, along with QPR, to sign the player at odds of 4/1 if he does move clubs this summer.

We think that he would be a solid if unspectacular signing for Manchester United. But Louis van Gaal seems to be very much about ‘the team’, and the blend involved in getting a successful one, rather than just signing high profile individuals.

If he can get Manchester United performing as a unit again then very few people will be complaining about underwhelming signings.

That said, we do feel there are better defenders in the Holland squad than Vlaar, that LvG could bring to the club this summer -including Daley Blind, Stefan de Vrij and Bruno Martins Indi.

But let’s have a look at Vlaar in action. Manchester United fans: can Vlaar step up for Manchester United?

If your assessment of Jones and Smalling is correct, perhaps you can explain why we have been linked with De Vrij, Hummels, Miranda, and Indi.
Perhaps you could take some advise from Roy Keane, who believes like I do, that both have got worse and in pre-World Cup games the two were a laughing stock…..It is obvious that neither can raise their game any further and now fall into the category like Rooney of a player who does not turn up for the big matches. And so far it looks like Van Gaal is not impressed either.
Footnote :Before last year’s nightmare it was Evans who was our top Centre half and it was between Rio and Vida whom he partnered ….Jones can neither cross, dribble or pass, just like Smalling.Their positional sense is suspect and have concentration lapses.I believe that one or both will be gone by 1st Sept.,
