This Powerhouse is Arsenal’s surprise top midfield choice. Not Vidal – report

Canny addition

If reports are to be believed then Arsenal are clearly stepping up their activity in the summer transfer market at last.

Newcastle and France right-back Mathieu Debuchy has reportedly confirmed that he will be joining Arsenal next season and he represents a really solid addition to the squad – a player who kept Arsenal’s last right back, Bacary Sagna, out of the France team at The World Cup.

There is also a huge amount of speculation about Alexi Sanchez to Arsenal and Gunners fans will surely hope this deal can be done because it will definitely improve the forward line – Sanchez can play out wide or through the middle to devastating effect.

And as well as strengthening the defence and attack Arsenal will reportedly reignite their interest in Germany star Lars Bender. There have been persistent rumours about Arsenal doing a deal for the midfielder and today The Express suggests that a bid is imminent. They say:

…according to reports, Arsene Wenger is also looking to bring in Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Lars Bender.

And The Irish Mirror said last night that, while the club has also looked at Sami Khedira and Morgan Schneiderlin,

..a deal with Leverkusen for Lars Bender would be their top choice as they seek to provide their defence with more protection – something that was an issue last season.

Arsenal fans would surely feel that Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal would be the perfect addition for the holding midfield role. He can do everything Bender can but he also scores lots of goals – a real dream of a player.

But a bidding war could well ensue for Vidal’s services with other clubs reportedly interested. We don’t think Arsenal will get involved in that and would prefer to sign a player who represents value for money for Arsene Wenger.

Bender is a few years younger than Vidal and, although he doesn’t have the same goal threat (although he has hit 4 in 17 games for Germany), he’s a mobile and tireless worker who is careful in the pass and central to most games. We think that he could finally fill that hole in the Arsenal midfield to make them more sturdy against the big boys.

Let’s see him in full flow. Arsenal fans: would you be disappointed if you signed Bender instead of Vidal or Khedira this summer?

I actually like the look of all of Bender, Schneiderlin, Vidal and Khedira. Asgood as Vidal looks it is precicely his goal scoring record which says to me itshould be one of the other 3 we look at. It tends to indicate he is more a defence minded boxto box player as oppose to a holding or sitting defensive midfielder. In many ways I think Vidal will be too similar to Ramsey so won’t give us the balnce we need in midfield which I think will come from someone who predominantly sits at the base of midfield but is technically good enough and mobile enough to dictate play and bring the ball outat times. Bender is also slightly bigger but still looks very mobile.
