The Future of Everton’s midfield?

So the Tello to Everton story made the headlines yesterday and that would obviously be a sensational signing for the club. Having lost Gerard Deulofeu, who was a revelation last season, Everton could seriously use some more guile and creativity – Tello could almost be a like for like replacement. He’s adaptable, highly skilled, loves a dribble and needs games after warming the bench too often for Barca.

But, another Everton rumour was floated yesterday and continues to resonate around the press today. The Mail began with the footnote:

Everton have also asked about Heerenven midfielder Hakim Ziyech, 21.

The Guardian followed up today by writing:

Herenveen’s 21-year-old midfielder Hakim Ziyech is currently caught in a tug-of-love between the Dutch clubs PSV Eindhoven and Ajax, but could have his head turned by Everton

Ziyeck looks like a very exciting prospect indeed. Regarded by some as the new star of Dutch football he can play in several attacking midfield roles or out wide. And, it’s not just his balance and fleet feet that are drawing attention. Because he seems to understand that the currency of a successful footballer is goals. And Ziyech appears to have an uncanny knack of scoring them.

At just 21 years of age he scored 9 in 38 games for Heerenveen last season, mainly from midfield positions.

The World Cup obviously came too early for the lad but he has played for the Holland U21s and showed his scoring prowess there too with 2 goals in just 3 appearances.

Roberto Martinez is building what looks like a really exciting side at Everton and this guy would surely suit the style of play at Goodison. He’s quick, technically brilliant and would be given ample opportunity under the maverick boss.
