Low risk investment

We are bigger fans of Manchester United’s current centre backs than most. Whether they are good enough to stem the attacks of the top teams next season remains to be seen. But in Phil Jones and Chris Smalling Manchester United have two England internationals who are getting better by the game.

Jones has had a super build up to The World Cup and was one of Manchester United’s better performers last season. Chris Smalling was perhaps harshly treated because he was often asked to play at full back – a role that he patently struggles with. But, at centre back, he’s given some assured performances of late. Add Jonny Evans to the mix and things don’t look so bad, despite the departure of two defensive legends this summer.

But three defenders have been heavily linked to Manchester United this summer – Miranda, Mangala and Hummels.

We think that all three would be super acquisitions. soccersweep would take Mangala first – he’s a natural born athlete and looks the business – and Hummels would be our second choice. In fact they could prove to be an amazing partnership. The cool head and neat distribution of Hummels twinned with the monstrous power and pace of Mangala. They could form an impenetrable pairing.

With the recent rumours about the German, Manchester United are clear favourites with SkyBet at odds of 2/1 to sign Hummels this summer – pretty short odds. At 25 he already has 30 caps for Germany and there is still room for improvement at his fairly young age. He looks like a very low risk investment for Manchester United. The real question is whether Dortmund will sell.

Let’s see Hummels in action. Manchester United fans: Number one choice?
