Worth a punt?

Everton and aren’t known for taking too many players who have played for their Merseyside rivals down the years. But when a really good one becomes available there is no reason to let pride get in the way of success. Is there?

Could one such player be Charlie Adam? Signed by Kenny Dalglish for around £6.75m in 2011 he never really got going for the Reds and was shipped out to Stoke pretty quickly.

Back to his metronomic passing best now, he’s done a really good job for the club since he joined them in 2012.

But this good form may once again see him linked with a move away. There was talk of David Moyes bringing him to Everton a couple of years back.

And Everton are actually favourites with bookmakers SkyBet, at odds of 5/1, to sign Adam if he does leave the club this summer.

You would imagine that it would be either him or Gareth Barry for a permanent role at Everton as they are quite similar players.

Charlie Adam is a tad more adventurous and a player who loves to have a shot of goal. Barry is more defensively minded but, still, they are possibly too alike to play together with great effect.

Both like to control the tempo, pass from deep and keep things ticking along at the hub of the midfield. Both probably need mobile players around them.

At the age of 28 however Charlie Adam might even prove to be a better player for Everton than Gareth Barry who, at 33, can’t have too many miles left in the legs.

Let’s have a look at the man in action. Everton fans would you have any qualms about signing a player from the old rivals?

He’s a pub player, not an Everton player.
