Manchester United favourites to sign World Cup star after declaration

Louis-van-gaal2

Is this the main target?

Manchester United’s transfer activity so far this summer seems to be based on who they don’t want rather than who they do.

Various reports this summer have suggested that Manchester United are not interested in Toni Kroos, not interested in Cesc Fabregas and not interested in Eliaquim Mangala. That’s some serious quality for Manchester United not to be interested in. LvG must have some very good cards up his sleeve if he really doesn’t want that trio. Manchester United fans will hope so anyway.

With Louis van Gaal now away at The World Cup it’s difficult to know who Manchester United actually do want.

But we do know that Bayern Munchen star Thomas Muller has expressed concerns about his future in recent public utterances. After telling us last month that:

‘I didn’t make these rumours up myself, so I don’t particularly want to comment on them too much, but I’m definitely not about to jump ship at Bayern,’

..the goal posts seem to have changed a little, perhaps after a conversation with the new Manchester United manager? Muller said this week:

“I have reached the point where I want to know if I am an essential component of the Bayern Munich first XI for the new season and if the club has plans for me over the coming years,” said Muller.

“That’s why I will be out to have a meeting.

“I am not the type of guy that says, ‘Alright, I have played a good part and will keep my mouth shut and everyone else is able to do with me whatever he wants’.

We also know that Louis van Gaal brought Muller into the Bayern München team as a youngster and gave in his first opportunity to shine – which he took with both hands. Muller earlier said of Van Gaal:

“It’s no secret that Louis van Gaal and I have a relationship that goes a little beyond the normal relationship between coaches and players.”

So it’s not inconceivable to think that Manchester United and Louis van Gaal might well pursue the player this summer.

Certainly bookmaker SkyBet thinks that Manchester United is the most likely destination for Muller if he does leave Germany this summer.

At odds of 5/1 Manchester United is the team best placed to sign the player who, was the top scorer in the last World Cup. At 24 he’s already played 48 times for Germany and scored 17 goals – not bad for someone who isn’t seen as an out-and-out striker.

The 24-year-old has been excellent form for Bayern scoring 26 in 51 games in the season just gone. We aren’t sure exactly which role he would suit at Manchester United but, at least he has age on his side and he could become a long-term component of the next vintage.

Let’s have a look at him in action. Manchester United fans – keen?
