Manchester United: Several Possible Selection Surprises for Bayern match

Tinkerman Moyes?

David Moyes implied that he may do things differently as Manchester United chase goals in the second leg against Bayern Munich. United don’t need to necessarily win but they do need to score to triumph in Bavaria. Moyes told ManUnited.com:

“Tactically, I thought we played very well on the night. But I have got to say, in the second game, we might need to think differently, look at it in a different way to the first game.

So what surprises might he pull?

Buttner Instead of Evra

It seems obvious, now Patrice Evra is back from suspension, that he will play tonight. But Alex Buttner provided real mobility and dynamism down that left side after a slightly shaky start last week. He certainly put in the miles and managed to shackle the wide men pretty well throughout.

That said Evra will surely get the nod based on experience

Likelihood – 2/10

Smalling

Again, the experience of Rio and Nemanja Vidic proved crucial to United’s first leg draw. But their lack of pace wasn’t exposed because Manchester United defended so deep. United may wish to push further up the park tonight in search of goals. If they play a higher line Chris Smalling’s pace may get him picked.

Likelihood 4/10

Jones instead of Fellaini

Jones could feasibly pay play in three positions tonight – at centre back, right back instead of Rafael, or in defensive midfield in place of Maroaune Fellaini. The Belgian played pretty poorly last week and just hasn’t quite grasped the nettle at Manchester United yet. We would definitely play the highly talented Jones, instead of Fellaini in the defensive midfield role, if the England international isn’t needed as a right back.

6/10

Chichatito up top

Chicharito’s pace and finishing ability would have him ahead of Danny Welbeck for us as the man up top. With Rooney’s defensive capabilities needed from the number 10 position the Mexican might just get the nod at number 9 on this occasion, with Welbs out wide.

Likelihood – 6/10

Kagawa

It’s sad that we should have to talk about the inclusion of one of Manchester United’s brightest sparks as ‘a surprise’. But Moyes hasn’t found a place for him in some of the biggest games and he may feel Kagawa is a luxury that the team can do with out again tonight. But with Giggs doubtful Kagawa’s creativity would be valuable.

Likelihood – 5/10
