Liverpool

The ONLY downside for Liverpool

Close but no cigar?

Let’s make no mistake about it – Liverpool are absolutely on fire right now. You just know they are going to find a way to win every game. Watching yesterday we weren’t concerned at any stage.

Liverpool were trailing twice but their ability to score goals is currently so great that it was always going to be a case of when they scored rather than if.

The last team to play with this sort of abandon and goal prowess was Manchester United in their heyday. But cast your minds right back to when Liverpool were soon to hand the baton of power to Manchester United. It was 1988 and Fergie had just finished his first full season at Manchester United.

In that second half of the season Manchester United were on top form. From the turn of the year until the end of the campaign they only lost two games in the league. They finished with 81 points and would have won the league had it not been for the form of Liverpool, who won 9 and drew one of their last ten league games.

At the time Fergie said something along the lines that he wished the season could have gone on for another ten games – t’internet wasn’t in the mainstream then so it’s been a difficult quote to find. But the sound byte remains firmly in the memory – Manchester United were flying but had found form slightly too late to win the title that year.

And it feels very similar to where Liverpool are currently. The balance of power looks to be swinging back to Merseyside and Liverpool are playing easily the most convincing football in the league right now. And, although they had a decent first half of the season, they are almost unrecognisable from the rather clunky team that ground out a 1-0 win against United at Anfield in the autumn.

So the only downside for Liverpool right now is that they may simply run out of games. They might have peaked too late. Because, if there were 15-20 games to go, you would have to back Liverpool strongly for the title on this form.

As it is, we should be in for one of the most exciting finishes in years.
