Liverpool in shock transfer link for superstar

As we were previewing Liverpool’s massive game against Manchester United this weekend we were struck by what a good job Brendan Rodgers has done.

Because, when you look at the squad list, there isn’t a huge amount of depth in that squad. Beyond the 1 to 11 Rodgers has young hopefuls and a couple of mid renege signings who haven;t yet done the business. When you look at the squads of Manchester City and Chelsea it’s pretty amazing that Liverpool have been so competitive and remain in the title hunt.

So there will be some serious spending this summer, you would have thought. But one area that looks pretty secure is in goal. Simon Mignolet has had the odd clanger but has largely been a model of consistency. We think that he will go on to cement his place as number one with Pepe Reina currently looking unlikely to return.

So Liverpool might look for another understudy in that department, with Brad Jones nowhere near the number 1 spot, but this report is still somewhat surprising. The Guardian says this morning:

Liverpool will attempt to shore up their decidedly porous defence from the goal-line out, by replacing the occasionally flappy Simon Mignolet with Víctor Valdés, who long ago announced his intention to leave Barcelona this summer.

The Barcelona keeper may be slightly on the wane but, at just 32, he will have no intention of sitting on the bench at Liverpool. He may as well get splinters on his arse at Barca. Wherever he goes he will expect to be the top man. So this either means that Mignolet’s place is under threat or that this whole tale is hot air.

Still, we think Valdes could turn out to be a sensational acquisition for a Premier League team.
