News came this week that Manchester United’s captain and stalwart, Nemanja Vidic, will leave the club at the end of the season.

After 7 brilliant years, in which Manchester United have enjoyed unprecedented success, the Serbian stopper will probably see out his career in Italy.

After the performance against Arsenal many believe that his departure from Manchester United is premature. Nevertheless, it has seemingly been agreed with all parties, that the player will bid farewell to the club come May.

So this begs the question as to who will become the next captain of Manchester United. As far as we’re concerned there is only one answer to this question.

If Manchester United can tie Wayne Rooney down to a new long-term deal, and even if they can’t, the Manchester United number 10 is the obvious choice for the role.

A talisman in the strict sense of the word Wayne Rooney has pulled Manchester United through innumerable games – and not just with his many goals for the club.

We have always maintained that Wayne Rooney is Manchester United’s best striker, midfielder and defender. We honestly believe that if you put him in goal at the top level he wouldn’t let you down. He is the perfect footballer to have in your club because of his rare combination of skill and determination.

Wayne Rooney can often be seen berating Manchester United teammates. With his seniority in the team he has become a highly respected figure. Players fear and revere him in equal measure.

There is nobody even close to Wayne Rooney in terms of influence on the park at Manchester United. He leads by example and he is vociferous when he needs to be. He loves the club and he loves the game.

For us there is no decision to be made. Wayne Rooney is the obvious choice to be the new Manchester United captain.
