Good enough for United?

Manchester United has been ascribed to more transfer rumours than ever before, over the last few months, as David Moyes desperately tries to reshape the club in his preferred image.

One of the main problems that the newish Manchester United manager inherited was a questionable midfield – a midfield that was apparently bereft of the sort of dynamo that is becoming less prominent in The Premier League but is still an important component of a successful eleven.

Yaya Toure is a fine example. He gives Manchester City grit and physical presence in the midfield when backs are against the wall. City are fortunate enough to have someone who does far more than just defend. Nevertheless, he does an important shielding job of the back 5.

Anderson was supposed to do it but never made the grade. Fellaini is supposed to do it but hasn’t won too many admirers so far at Manchester United.

Some media outlets today report that another may have been identified. Cheick Tiote, known by some fans as Mr.T due to some of his hairstyles, is being mooted as a possible signing by Manchester United this summer.

The Star yesterday revealed that Manchester United are tracking the Ivorian international.

He tried to sign Ivory Coast international Tiote during his Everton days.

And United also enquired about the 27-year-old during last month’s transfer window.

He is regarded as one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League and Moyes has identified him as the ideal replacement for Michael Carrick.

Here is what we think. Manchester United need more than just a destroyer. Fellaini is such a player and he hasn’t done anything of merit for the club. Manchester United need more creativity. That’s their main problem. Tiote is a decent player. He works very hard and is quick across the ground. But give me a 32 year old Carrick any day. He does the defensive bit well but also offers real quality going forward.

The reason that Yaya Toure is so good is that he fulfils different functions. Great in defence but also a superb attacking tool. Manchester United already have people who can defend for their lives. They need a genuinely top all round midfielder. In our opinion, Tiote isn’t it.
