Liverpool reportedly in for wonderkid

Liverpool lost out to Chelsea for the signature of Mohammed Salah at the eleventh hour, as Chelsea made a quick and decisive move to compensate for the sudden departure of Juan Mata to Old Trafford.

That one will have stung for Rodgers as he not only looked like a very exciting young player but also exactly the sort of footballer that the Liverpool boss prefers to sign. A youngster with great mobility, pace and athleticism. A player on an upward trajectory but nowhere near the top of his career curve.

Liverpool tried until the last minute to sign the player – alas it was too late. But we wouldn’t be surprised if Liverpool went for another player before the end of January. It’s never that clear how much money the club has to spend. But one the size of Liverpool would, you imagine, easily be oable to manage a £15-20 million transfer in the next few days. They are still a club in transition and need to invest if they want to seriously challenge for top honours over the next few years.

One player linked again today is much sought after youngster Saul Niguez. The Atletico Madrid starlet has been watched by scouts from some of the biggest clubs in Europe over the last couple of months and The Metro reckons that Liverpool scouts watched him at the weekend.

The Metro says:

Liverpool are reportedly weighing up a transfer-window move for Atletico Madrid youngster Saul Niguez.

Niguez has a £20million release clause in his contract, however it is thought Atletico could be persuaded to part with him for as low as £12m.

Rodgers is keen to bolster his midfield options after missing out to Chelsea in the chase for Mohamed Salah and Lucas Leiva’s fitness following his latest knee injury a concern.

The report goes on to suggest that Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has already been in talks with the player’s father regarding a potential move. Niguez began his career at Real Madrid before moving to Atletico in 2008. The 19 year old, who has represented Spain at every youth international level, has been on loan this season at Rayo Vallecano, playing 19 times and scoring once.

A defensive midfielder by nature, Liverpool may look to get a deal done this month, with Lucas injured.
