Everton have been busy in the transfer window and may well look to do some more business before the end of January.

Aiden McGeady has been signed along with man mountain Lacina Traore. Everton manager Roberto Martinez will hope that easy to play a significant part going forward.

But perhaps the biggest signing for Everton, over this transfer window, has come in the last 48 hours. The FA Offical website reported today:

Everton received a significant boost ahead of the 222nd Merseyside derby at Anfield after Leighton Baines signed a new four-year contract.

Roberto Martinez revealed that had now been completed a day before they face near-neighbours Liverpool.

“I can give you good news, Leighton Baines has signed a new contract. It is for the next four years,” he said.

Baines has been linked to Manchester United since before David Moyes took the helm in the summer. It was thought by many that Manchester United would make another bid for the player in January. But with Everton remaining firm in their desire to keep the player, and Baines more than content where he is, a new deal has finally been penned for the 29 year old.

Manchester United are now thought to be pursuing a deal for Southampton flyer Luke Shaw. Meanwhile Baines and Everton can concentrate on the continued success of their relationship and the club finishing as high as possible in the league this season.

Baines has represented Everton 215 times since joining from Wigan in 2007 – he’s scored 19 goals with that sweet left foot in the period. He has also played for England 22 times since his debut in 2009 and many feel that he will become the first choice left back for England’s tilt at the World Cup in Brazil 2014

Let’s remind ourselves of the amazing service that he has given to Everton. Toffees fans, best signing of the window?
