Chelsea: target’s ‘head turned’ by rumours

Chelsea in fro two midfielders?

With news that Nemanja Matic could well be Chelsea’s first major signing of the winter window you would imagine that their business for midfielders would be done for now. Ex-Chelsea player Matic won’t come cheap and will plug the defensive midfield gap opened up by the ageing Essien and Mikel.

But another reported target of Chelsea also looks like he may well leave his club this January. Inter spokesmen told reporters over the weekend that unsettled star Freddy Guarin has had his ‘head turned’ by potential suitors. The Mirror reports:

Inter Milan president Erick Thohir has admitted that Chelsea target Fredy Guarín is likely to leave the club during the current transfer window.

“We can’t make a player stay when his heart is not in it, but at another club” says Erick Thohir of Colombia midfielder linked with Stamford Bridge move

“When there are great offers from big clubs, we have to take them into account. And above all, we can’t make a player stay when his heart is not in it, but at another club.”

While Manchester United are also rumoured to have shown an interest the speculation linking Guarin with Chelsea has been much more intense. The big question now is, with Matic potentially joining the club, will Guarin be left out in the cold? They are very similar players and it is highly debatable whether Chelsea will want to spend up to £50m on two defensive midfielders this January.

The energetic 27-year-old has played 47 times for his national team Columbia and scored three goals in the process. He’s a great athlete and strong reader of the game who would fit in well sitting in front of the defence.

But we think that if the Matic deal does go ahead then Chelsea’s interest in Guarin could well cool.

Chelsea fans, do you need two new players for the midfield right now?
