Man U

The top midfielders being linked with Manchester United

I don’t know about you but I’d love an end to the speculation and know for sure who is going to sign for who this summer. In relation to Manchester United, midfielders seem to be on the menu, with so many sports media outlets mooting midfield magicians for Moyes. It’s apparent to many that Manchester United need to add numbers to this area of the park but quite who he, or they, will be remains a mystery. Some believe that Manchester United need a defensive midfielder and others think it’s time for a true replacement for the unbelievable Paul Scholes. David Moyes may want a defensive and attacking midfielder – this is probably why so many players have been speculated upon.

Let’s have a look at the shortlist so far.

Cesc Fabregas

The stories about Cesc to Manchester United persist despite the obvious logic that, if he were to return to England, it would be to Arsenal. But, aside from the unlikely addition of Gareth Bale, we think that this signing would be the best possible one for United this summer. Those with short memories should be reminded that Fabregas was a true magician in The Premier League. Whatever the price, he would be worth every penny to a United team perhaps lacking invention in the middle.

Luka Modric

Another in the Cesc mould, Modric is a silky and quietly efficient footballer who possibly hasn’t given the ball away since he was in diapers. Some think he lacks goal threat but Manchester United fans will attest that after seeing his sizzler at Old Trafford in The Champions League this season. He would be a nice addition to the team but one feels that Shinji Kagawa isn’t too far behind in terms of quality. Still, he has been linked of late.

Kevin Strootman

A favourite amongst readers of soccersweep and rumoured target for United, the 21 year old Dutchman looks like a brilliant box to box player in the making. Great touch, scores goals and leads from the front. He could be a world-beater in a few years, but don’t Manchester United need a bit more experience at this point?

Marouane Fellaini

An absolute bloody pain in the arse of a player. He gets under the skin of the opposition whilst remaining just on the right side of the rule book. But don’t be decieved by the hustle and bustle. He’s a cultured footballer also. He has been strongly linked with United all summer, with Bill Kenwright possibly alluding to his buy out clause in a new interview.

Thiago Alcantara

A young magician who would mosey into most teams but can’t get a regular game at Barca. He’s another who can dictate to a game with effortless skill and speed of thought. But, with Ineista and Xavi starting to go grey, it’s hard to see Barcelona parting with this one permanently. This hasn’t stopped the sports pages being all over the United speculation like a nasty rash however.

So, Manchester United fans. Who would you most like to see treading the boards at The Theatre of Dreams next season?
